Adopted budget preserves programs and services for studentsThursday, July 08, 2010
The Medford School board has adopted a budget for the coming school year that protects programs and services for students, preserves jobs for the people who teach and support student learning, and ensures a full year of academic learning.
In adopting the budget, the board authorized the superintendent to implement a balanced approach to achieve $4.9 million in savings. District officials and employee leaders have met twice to determine how to accomplish the savings and anticipate additional meetings through the summer to finish the budget balancing work.
So far, the district has saved $3.6 million by renegotiating property and casualty insurance costs, holding cost-of-living wage and salary adjustments at 0%, securing a new employee accident insurance carrier, reducing utility expenses, reducing transfers to project accounts, and using reserves.
Updates will appear on the district website as further measures are implemented to save the remaining $1.3 million.
